CybAero to fly arctic UAS missions 2008-12-23

Swedish UAS developer and manufacturer CybAero has received a comprehensive mission order to be carried out under arctic maritime conditions. Under the flag of a Norwegian research program CybAero will perform several demo flights aimed to detect and classify oil spills on water. Total budget of the program is set to 22 million Norweigan crowns (approximately 2.8 MUSD)

There’s a clear trend towards higher transportation needs in the Arctic region. In this context, accurate forecasts on weather, icing conditions and possible environmental emissions are crucial. Harsh weather conditions with limited sight in geographically distant areas make a platform or ship based VTOL UAS (Vertical Take-Off and Landing Unmanned Aerial Systes) a very competitive alternative to satellite systems and conventional reconnaissance flights for data gathering.

The Research Council of Norway has decided to allocate funding to the research project ”Arctic UAV -  Bruk av UAS til overvåking og datainnsamling i nordområdena” which is part of a programme called ”Maritim virksomhet og offshore operasjoner” (MAROFF). CybAero is included in the consortium that applied for and was awarded funding. The project is headed by the Norwegian company Simicon AS and constitutes the Norwegian part of the EUREKA project called "Maridrone - E!3967, maritime drones for cold areas".

CybAero CEO Mikael Hult is very pleased with the contract; - This confirms our choice of business strategy. We believe that environmentally oriented flight missions will represent a considerable share of the civilian UAS market. We’re already present on the defence market and this arctic mission is an interesting opportunity for us.

Finding oil spills
CybAero will be responsible for adaptation of infrastructure and helicopter system for arctic conditions, also the company will do demonstrations flights aimed to detect and classify oil spills on water.

– By participating in the MAROFF programme we see a great opportunity to collect data and gain operative test experience. We can also put various system components to the test within the project, says Johan Martensson, Chief Technical Officer at CybAero. In the project we develop UAS solutions for maritime applications  to be used  under severe conditions.

CybAero’s share of  the project amounts to approximately 300 000 USD.

UAS service market breakthrough for CybAero 2008-12-17

Swedish UAS manufacturer CybAero delivered the first ever customer service last Friday. The mission was carried out using an unmanned VTOL UAV on behalf of FOI - Swedish Defence Research Agency – and this was the first of several customer flights in the near future.

Mission consisted of testing various types of sensors and the vehicle used for the mission flight was one of the two vehicles destined for delivery to Scandicraft, an order received by CybAero earlier this year.

The flight was carried out by the CybAero team and the APID UAV helicopter platform was airborne for close to one hour, in temperatures below zero degrees centigrade and various snow fall.

– This is a breakthrough for us in the service sector. We believe more customers with civilian missions applicable for our helicopters will choose to buy the service itself initially, instead of a complete system, says Mikael Hult, CEO of CybAero. This is more cost efficient for the customer and generates both revenue and more flight hours for us.

– The FOI order rounds up a great year for CybAero, beginning in January with us performing Sweden’s first public autonomous demo flight ever in downtown Stockholm. In late spring we accepted an invitation by the Pakistan Navy to fly a maritime mission from a frigate, which was a great challenge.

– Furthermore we have noticed a considerably increased interest in our products during this autumn. We are currently pursuing dialogues with several large international industrial groups regarding joint efforts on sales and development and we are very optimistic, Hult concludes.

Successful UAV test flight première by NRL and CybAero 2008-02-07
CybAero participated in the first test flight conducted by the United States Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) for the unmanned helicopter platform called Vantage. CybAero is a designer and manufacturer of vertical take-off-and-landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). NRL has in-depth experience in designing and developing both fixed and rotary UAV prototypes of many sizes and capabilities. NRL has been conducting research in unmanned systems technologies since the mid 1970s. The Vantage flew on a restricted range near NRLs Washington DC facility in the USA. The flight included various speed tests to assess flight control performance, hovering in medium-strong wind and vertical take off and landing. Successful low-speed flight demonstration of Vantage was conducted when the vehicle autonomously maneuvered over a pre-programmed flight course.

The Vantage is a HMMWV-transportable, vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned helicopter. With fully autonomous flight operation and differential GPS navigation, Vantage will be capable of performing missions such as: pipeline monitoring, power line monitoring, border patrol, remote sensing, forest inspection, communication relay, reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition. The vehicle is powered by a custom UEL 801 42-HP heavy-fuel (JP5, JP8, Jet A) rotary engine. To save weight and mechanical complexity, the ducted tail rotor is electrically driven with power from an onboard starter/generator. Overall body length is 112 inches with a rotor diameter of 109 inches. With a gross weight of 380 lb and a payload capacity of 25–35 lb, Vantage has an estimated endurance of 3–5 hours, a dash speed of 100 kts, and a service ceiling of 8,000 feet. Originated by US Naval Research Laboratory, the Vantage now continues as a collaborative development project between NRL and CybAero.

CybAero is involved in UAV development programmes in the USA and Sweden, as well as in the United Arab Emirates, making the company one of the more internationally experienced in the industry. During 2008 CybAero together with United States Naval Research Laboratory will be continuing the development and commercialization of the Vantage.
